June 2007 Fishing Report
Hi again! Ivan Jensen here for another Unreel Fishin report.
Well the first part of the month has seen some tremendous weather for fishing and we have been taking full advantage with a good run of charters with plenty of fish coming over the side of all variety’s. Good catches of reds early in the month again which have seemed to slow up a bit on the last couple of trips. The boys still hooked up on the big ones but were not able to get them in the boat for various reasons. At least the sharks have slowed up along with the current which has been a constant 2 knots out on the shelf and up closer to Waddy Point.
The moon phases have not seen to dictate when the fish are bitting this month but I am sure that will change.
Fresh mullet seems to be the big winner on those reds with fresh trawl squid still accounting for the scarlets and of course IQF pillys for the snapper. I have often been asked where I get my bait, as you can imagine I go through a fair bit of bait and I buy in bulk from Raptis Seafood’s in Brisbane who supply me with fresh quality bait at a reasonable price. In the local area Toni Mills at Fisherman’s Warehouse is your best bet for quality tackle as well.
Snapper have started to show up in numbers finally and the colder the weather gets the better the snapper fishing should get. Pearlys are still proving allusive while good size parrot have made a welcome return.
A couple of reports of 5 kilo pearlys and snapper and the odd bar cod to 20kg being caught in 210 metres of water, definitely worth a look if you have the gear other wise its dam hard work and a long way to go if your not serious and don’t forget the 4-5 kg sinkers you will need!
If you’re prepared to do the miles and be patient you will be rewarded.
The boys at the Fraser Island fishing comp had good weather for most of the comp and good reports of quality fish being boated with the red going over the 17 kg mark and the snapper around 9 kg while a ripper red throat at 5.5kg from all reports every body was happy with the fishing. I have a new web site up and running with reports and pics so check it out. Till next time
